Tomorrow, on 12 March, MEPs will vote in plenary session on the proposed amendments on the Weights & Dimensions Directive. A number of associations from the rail sector and beyond have sent a joint letter to MEPs on the major consequences of this text if adopted without further amendments.

4/3/2024 - Unanimously Adopted Proposals of Transport Committee on Railway Capacity a Big Step Forward for Rail Freight

The European Parliament's TRAN (Transport and Tourism Committee) today unanimously adopted its position on the use of railway infrastructure capacity in the Single European Railway Area. The proposed Regulation seeks to increase railway capacity and improve reliability by creating an international, digital and flexible system for managing and allocating scarce railway capacity. Although the draft proposal from the European Commission has been generally positively received, gaps have been identified, particularly in relation to user consultation and regulatory oversight. The Parliament has moved in a positive direction in addressing these open concerns.

On 14 February 2024, the European Parliament?s Transport and Tourism Committee adopted the compromise text on the Revision of the TEN-T Guidelines. This now paves the way for adoption by the European Parliament Plenary before the European Parliament elections which will, most likely, shortly be followed by approval by EU ministers and formal adoption. Whilst ERFA support that an agreement has been reached, paving the way for clarity on infrastructure developments over the coming decades, further attention will be needed on certain points.
